Name: Mandevilla sanderi
Commonly: Mandevilla, Brazilian Jasmine, Rocktrumpets
200mm pots
Mandevilla is a perennial, fast growing ornamental twining-climbing shrub that can grow to 2-3m tall.
In warmer, humid environments can even grow to 4.5m when trained and fixed to a trellis or arch, and is also a very good choice for hanging baskets.
The showy flowers are a deep red to pink and bright orange. The blooms are racemes that flower terminally (on the end) of long stems, usually with 5 lobed bold and brightly, beautiful flowers from late spring, and prolifically throughout all of summer.
The leaf blades are elliptical - ovate in shape with an entirely smooth margin and a slightly curved, pointed tip . The leaf has a thick epidermis, whilst the surface is hard and glossy.
Requires a full sun position and can thrive in temperatures from 5-45c.
Once established and trained the plant is very low maintenance and hardy by nature.
The large tuberous roots store a great deal of water and energy, along with the thick dark green glossy leaves, assures that Mandevilla are quite harsh weather and drought tolerant.
*Care must be taken when pruning or cutting the plant as stems and leaves exude a white milky latex sap. This is toxic and must not be touched or ingested.
Water weekly during the warmer growing months of spring and summer. In the cooler months, water when the top part of the soil is dry or if the plant is showing signs of thirst.
