Name: Gardenia jasminoides
Commonly: Gardenia, Cape Jasmine, Jasmin, Cape Jessamine
Family: Rubiaceae - coffee
Gardenia are perennial, evergreen flowering ornamental shrub that grow best in tropical, sub-tropical, and warm climates from -5 to 43°c.
In cooler climates, they can be grown indoors.
Gardenia have been grown in China for well over a thousand years and were introduced into English gardens in the mid-18th century.
They thrive in a sunny or part shaded position with dappled light.
Bright white, fragrant rotate flowers appear throughout most of the year.
They are pleasantly perfumed with a jasmine scent and produce a sweet nectar that attracts a myriad of beneficial insects and pollinators.
A monthly slow release fertiliser in summer ensures healthy, vibrant foliage and long-lasting fragrant blooms in early spring, late summer, autumn, and winter.
Gardenia grow up to 2m tall, spread up to 2.5m wide and can be grown as a small to medium shrub or as a hedge plant.
When grown as a hedge plant with regular pruning, flowering can be reduced.
Cultivation in pots or planter boxes in the garden or landscape offer reliable, tough and tolerant foliage and flowers with only a moderate level of maintenance. Growing in hanging pots offer another excellent option.
They require fertile, well-drained soil that is on the acidic side of pH 5-6.5.
Pruning in early spring and winter will rejuvenate the plant and maintain a compact, bushy growth habit.
